Maths in Year 1

Working individually, as a class and in groups, children will be investigating, counting, playing number games and using everyday objects to help them solve problems and do simple calculations.

As the children start to become more familiar with the language used in maths, they will be encouraged to talk about their methods for solving problems and presenting their results. Children will be given opportunities to deepen their learning by using their reasoning skills in a range of real life contexts and problems.

This term, children will be learning all about number, place value, addition and subtraction. These statements show some of the things your child will have been learning about over this term.

Number and Place Value

Pupils will be taught too:

• count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number

• count, read and write numbers to 100 in numerals; count in multiples of twos, fives and tens

• given a number, identify one more and one less

• identify and represent numbers using objects and pictorial representations including the number line, and use the language of: equal to, more than, less than (fewer), most, least

• read and write numbers from 1 to 20 in numerals and words.

Addition and Subtraction

Pupils will be taught too:

• read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+), subtraction (–) and equals (=) signs

• represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20

• add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including zero
