Supporting Children with Medical Needs

At Sacred Heart Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that pupils with medical needs are fully supported so that they can attend school safely, confidently and without unnecessary barriers to their learning.

We work closely with parents, carers and relevant healthcare professionals to ensure that each child’s medical needs are clearly understood and appropriately planned for. Individual Healthcare Plans are developed where required, outlining the child’s condition, symptoms, medication needs, and any emergency procedures. These plans are regularly reviewed and updated in partnership with families and medical professionals.

Where prescribed medication is required during the school day, it is safely stored and administered by trained staff in line with agreed procedures. A number of staff are trained in specific medical needs, including the use of EpiPens, auto injectors, asthma management, diabetes care, and basic first aid, ensuring that appropriate support is always available.

We also ensure that reasonable adjustments are made to support pupils’ access to learning and school activities, taking into account any limitations caused by their medical condition. This may include additional rest breaks, support with physical activities, or adaptations to the school day where necessary.

By working in partnership and maintaining clear procedures, Sacred Heart Primary School ensures that pupils with medical needs are safe, included and able to participate fully in all aspects of school life.
