SEMH and Our Zehora Hub
Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) Support
Our Aim
At Sacred Heart, we understand that children's emotional wellbeing plays a vital role in their happiness, confidence and success in school. We are committed to creating a nurturing environment where every child feels safe, valued and supported to reach their full potential.
Our SEMH Team works closely with staff and families to identify any social, emotional or mental health needs as early as possible. Through a carefully planned graduated approach, we provide timely support that is tailored to each child's individual circumstances.Through our SEMH provision, we aim to help children develop emotional resilience, confidence and positive relationships so that they feel a strong sense of belonging and can flourish both in school and beyond.
Our Zehora Hub
Our SEMH Hub is a calm and welcoming space designed to help children develop the skills they need to understand and manage their emotions, build positive relationships and engage successfully in learning. The provision is underpinned by trauma-informed practice, ensuring children feel understood and supported.
Pupils may access a range of targeted 1:1 or small group interventions, including programmes following the Hamish & Milo Curriculum, which supports emotional literacy, self-regulation, resilience and social skills. We also offer workshops and group sessions throughout the year that help children explore emotions, develop coping strategies and strengthen their wellbeing in a supportive environment. Support is regularly reviewed to ensure it meets each child's changing needs.
Alongside our taught intervention programme, we provide bespoke approaches around life skills, wellbeing, resilience, belonging, and support and interventions, aimed at building confidence and learning strategies that are relevant to each individual.
Children attending the hub receive specific teaching through a flexible curriculum which is carefully designed to meet their needs whilst also accessing some learning with their mainstream peers (as appropriate) and participating in the inclusive school community at every possible opportunity.
Working Together to Support Children
We believe that the best outcomes are achieved when school and home work in partnership. Parents and carers who have concerns about their child's emotional wellbeing are encouraged to speak to their child's class teacher in the first instance. Concerns can also be discussed with our Inclusion Team, who will work alongside families to explore appropriate support and next steps.
Where appropriate, children may be referred for targeted SEMH support within school, and parents will be involved throughout the process. We are committed to listening, offering guidance and working together to help every child feel happy, confident and ready to learn.
Hamish and Milo
Our school offers targeted SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) interventions through the Hamish and Milo Curriculum.
The Hamish and Milo Curriculum is a structured, nurturing and evidence-informed programme designed to support children in developing essential social and emotional skills. Through engaging stories, relatable characters and practical activities, it helps pupils understand their feelings, build resilience, and learn positive ways to manage emotions and relationships. The approach is grounded in research around child development, attachment and emotional wellbeing, ensuring that support is both effective and meaningful.
Through this curriculum, we provide tailored SEMH support for children who may need additional help with emotional regulation, confidence, behaviour or social interaction. Our aim is to create a safe, supportive environment where every child feels understood, valued and ready to succeed.
Programmes currently offered include:
- Building Self-Esteem and Confidence
- Understanding and Managing Emotions
- Anxiety and Worry Support
- Anger Management and Emotional Regulation
- Developing Positive Friendships and Social Skills
- Resilience and Coping Strategies
- Behaviour and Choices
- Transition and Change Support
These small-group and individual interventions allow us to respond flexibly to pupils’ needs and support their wellbeing alongside their academic learning, using approaches that are proven to make a positive difference.
