Outdoor Classroom Day 2026

As part of our celebration of Outdoor Classroom Day, pupils across the school took their learning beyond the classroom and into the outdoor environment. Outdoor Classroom Day is a global movement that encourages children to spend more time learning and playing outside, recognising the many benefits that outdoor experiences have on children's wellbeing, engagement, and development.

Throughout the day, pupils participated in a range of exciting science activities, using the outdoor environment as their classroom. The children explored scientific concepts through hands-on investigations, observations, and practical challenges, developing their curiosity and encouraging them to ask questions about the world around them. Learning outdoors provided opportunities for pupils to work collaboratively, think critically, and apply their knowledge in meaningful contexts.

The day strongly reflected our CRIC values. Pupils demonstrated excellent communication skills as they shared ideas, discussed their findings, and worked together to solve problems. They showed resilience when faced with challenges during investigations, adapting their approaches and persevering when things did not go as planned. Outdoor learning also encouraged independence, as pupils took ownership of their learning and explored scientific concepts for themselves. Many children displayed great courage, stepping outside their comfort zones to try new activities, share their ideas, and embrace new learning experiences.

Outdoor Classroom Day also links closely to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The activities supported Article 28, which states that every child has the right to an education, and Article 29, which highlights that education should help children develop their talents, abilities, and personalities to the fullest. The day also reflected Article 31, which recognises every child's right to relax, play, and take part in recreational activities, demonstrating that learning can take place in a variety of engaging and enjoyable ways.

In addition, the day promoted several key British Values. Pupils demonstrated mutual respect by listening to one another's ideas and encouraging their peers throughout the activities. They showed individual liberty by making choices, taking risks in their learning, and exploring different ways to solve problems. Through teamwork and discussion, children learned to value different opinions and experiences, helping to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.

A particular highlight of the day was welcoming parents and carers into school during the afternoon to take part in the outdoor science activities alongside their children. It was wonderful to see families learning together, sharing ideas, and enjoying the experience of outdoor education. The event provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen relationships between home and school while celebrating the children's enthusiasm, creativity, and scientific thinking.

Outdoor Classroom Day was a fantastic success, and it was wonderful to see pupils so engaged, motivated, and excited about their learning. The day highlighted the many benefits of outdoor education and reinforced the importance of providing children with rich, memorable learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom.
