Sharing Our Rights Respecting Journey

At Sacred Heart Primary, we are incredibly proud of our Rights Respecting Steering Group, who recently represented our school during a special visit from Tividale Community School. As part of our commitment to Outcome 9 of the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award—which focuses on children taking action to promote the rights of others—our pupils stepped up as true ambassadors for children’s rights.

The Steering Group delivered a confident and thoughtful presentation outlining our school’s Rights Respecting journey. They explained how we have embedded the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) into our curriculum, school ethos, behaviour systems, and everyday language. From class charters and regulation stations to our work on diversity, inclusion, and global citizenship, our pupils shared real examples of how rights are lived and respected at Sacred Heart.

Following the presentation, the children led a guided tour of the school, showing their visitors key rights-based features across classrooms and shared spaces. They spoke proudly about the initiatives we’ve developed—like our Nurture and Zehora Hubs, our charity campaigns, and the OPAL playground project—all of which are driven by a belief in dignity, respect, and the right of every child to be heard and included.

By sharing our practice and inspiring another school in our local community, our Steering Group demonstrated leadership, empathy, and a deep understanding of their role in promoting rights beyond our own setting. This event not only showcased the impact of our Rights Respecting work—it also reinforced our pupils' role as global citizens who understand that rights are for every child, everywhere.
