Construction projects

Year 1

Can you build a new house for the Three Little Pigs?

As part of Year 1's 'Houses and Homes' topic they were set the challenge of building a new house for the Three Little Pigs.

Throughout their design and technology lesson the children had to evaluate existing house, design their new house based on observations of existing houses, Explore different joining techniques and work as a team to build the final house.

In design and technology we use all of the curriculum drivers.

  • Communication - sharing our observations, ideas and improvements
  • Resilience - exploring and trying new techniques
  • Independence - working to develop my own skills
  • Courage - Working as a team to produce our final product

What have you enjoyed in this Design and Technology project?

"We had to build a house for the Three Little Pigs - We had to cut and join different pieces of paper and card. I like using the making tape and the string."

What skills have you learnt in this Design and Technology project?

"We learnt lots of new joining techniques. I liked the hole punch and string method."

How will Design and Technology help you in the future?

"I can take my skills to year 2 for my next project."

Year 2

Can you build a fire engine to fight The Great Fire of London?

Year 5

To build a replica Viking Long Boat

"We enjoyed being creative - we designed our Viking Long Boats to our own ideas based on the Long Boat we had researched."

"Throughout the project we had to use or communication skills and we worked in teams to produce the Long Boat."

"Resilience was important for this project as we had to work together and sometimes we had issues like our boat falling apart."

"Design and Technology will help me with my communication skills - I have been able to show resilience by working in small groups and I know this is a skill I will use in my future."

Year 6

To build a structure that is Earthquake proof

"For this project we had to use our previous knowledge of buildings to help us to best create and structure that would be earthquake proof."

"We used our communication skills throughout this project as we had to plan and make our earthquake proof structure. We had to be respectful to our partners ideas and contributions."

"Resilience helped us to produce a good outcome to our project. Sometimes we had to re-build or adapt our structure to meet the design brief."

What have you enjoyed in the Design and Technology project?

"We were given independence and was allowed to design the structure using our own ideas. This meant that we took ownership of our project and we wanted to achieve  the best outcome."

What skills have you learnt during this Design and Technology project?

"We looked at different support structures that would stabilise our building. We looked at cross bracing - we used this to strengthen our structures."

How will Design and Technology help you in the future?

"It has given me something to aspire too. It will help people with a passion for architecture to have aspirations and goals."

"Lots of job have are influenced or include elements of architecture and design - so I will be able to take the skills I have learnt in school onto future jobs and careers."
