Raising Butterflies
Each year, our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1 pupils have the exciting opportunity to raise butterflies, timed to coincide with late spring, when butterflies are most active.
Starting with tiny caterpillars, children observe them closely as they grow, learning to provide food and a safe environment. This hands-on experience encourages responsibility, empathy, and respect for all living things — important qualities for becoming thoughtful, caring global citizens. It also reflects the rights of the child, giving pupils the chance to explore, play, and learn creatively, while valuing their curiosity and voices throughout the process.
Over several weeks, the children watch in awe as the caterpillars form chrysalises and undergo the incredible process of metamorphosis, emerging as beautiful butterflies. This brings the life cycle to life, sparks wonder, and nurtures a love of nature that children carry with them beyond the classroom.
When the butterflies are ready, the pupils take great joy in releasing them safely into the school grounds, giving them the perfect start to their new life in late spring. Through this simple act, children learn that even small actions can make a positive difference to the world around them.
Below are some pictures capturing the children’s journey with the caterpillars as they transform into beautiful butterflies.
