Refugee Week 2025

🌍 Refugee Week at Sacred Heart Primary School

At Sacred Heart, we believe in nurturing empathy, kindness and global awareness in all of our pupils. As part of our commitment to these values, we recently took part in Refugee Week, a national celebration that shines a light on the strength, courage and contributions of refugees.

Throughout the week, children across the school explored what it means to be a refugee—learning about the reasons people are sometimes forced to leave their homes, the challenges they face during their journeys, and the importance of welcome and inclusion in new communities.

Pupils engaged in a wide range of thoughtful and creative activities. They wrote powerful poems expressing empathy and hope, created beautiful artwork symbolising freedom and belonging, and designed their very own superheroes—each with unique powers to help protect and support refugees around the world. These superheroes reflected the children's deep understanding of justice, compassion, and human rights.

As part of our discussions, we explored how many refugees around the world sadly have their rights limited or denied—including their right to education, to be safe, and to have a home. We linked this learning to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, with a particular focus on Article 22, which highlights the rights of refugee children to receive protection and support.

Refugee Week gave us a valuable opportunity to deepen our understanding of global issues and reflect on how we can help build a fairer, more welcoming world. We are incredibly proud of the sensitivity and creativity our pupils showed, and the thoughtful conversations they shared. It was a powerful reminder that our children are not only learners—but compassionate global citizens in the making.
