Spellings

As well as practising using Phonics within spellings during our Phonics sessions, we use the Year 1 and Year 2 Common Exception Words list to support our spellings within our writing. We practice our spellings as part of our English lessons, in the form of discreet focus or integrated within our editing and improving skills (Review: The 6R's in English).

We aim to ensure that all children are aware of, and can spell, the Year 1 and Year 2 common exception words before the end of Key Stage 1. Common exception words are words that children will come across frequently throughout their learning. Children will learn to read and spell these words during each phase as these words are decodable and use the sounds that have been taught.
