Clean Environment
Litter Watch
Children have the right to grow up in a clean and healthy environment, as stated in Article 24 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). This article highlights the right to good health, which includes access to clean air, water, and surroundings. To help children understand their role in protecting the environment, Year 1 took part in a special bin collectors role-play session (delivered by Litter Watch), where they explored waste removal and recycling in a fun and engaging way.
During the session, the children sorted different types of rubbish, learning what can be recycled and what belongs in the bin. They also read stories about keeping the environment clean and took part in activities that reinforced the importance of responsible waste disposal. By engaging in these experiences, they not only learned about the role of bin collectors but also developed a sense of responsibility for looking after their world.
Litter Picking
At Sacred Heart, we believe in fostering a sense of responsibility and care for the environment. That’s why our children regularly take part in litter picking across the school grounds. This initiative not only helps to keep our environment clean and safe but also links directly to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
In particular, Article 24 states that children have the right to a clean and safe environment to live, play, and learn in. By engaging in litter picking, our pupils take an active role in protecting their surroundings, ensuring that everyone in our school community can enjoy a healthy space.
This activity also empowers children to become responsible citizens, understanding the impact of waste on the planet and the importance of looking after our shared spaces. It connects to wider global goals, such as sustainability and caring for our world, helping to shape thoughtful and engaged young people.
Through this initiative, we encourage every child to take pride in their environment and recognise that they have the right—and the responsibility—to contribute to a cleaner, greener future. 🌍♻️
